Knoxville ranks high on BusinessWeek’s list of good places for new grads

KNOXVILLE ‘ BusinessWeek magazine ranks Knoxville among its top 30 cities for new college graduates.

In its current edition, the magazine reports that the most promising region in the U.S. for job hunting by recent graduates is the South, with Houston topping the list as the city with the best mix of job openings, pay, and affordability.

Knoxville placed 26th on the list, ahead of Tucson, Ariz., Seattle, Portland, Ore., and Tampa, Fla.

The magazine said Knoxville lies under most people’s radar, but its stable economy ‘is worth a second look for recent college graduates.’ Knoxville is the only Tennessee city on the list.

‘Knoxville is a terrific place for young professionals,’ Mike Edwards, Knoxville Chamber president and CEO, said today in a statement. ‘The Chamber works hard to attract college graduates to the region and helps graduates from area colleges and universities stay in Knoxville. These young professionals are important contributions to the vibrancy of our regional economy.’

Tampa was the only Florida city on the list, which did not include any cities from California or North Carolina, states that rank high on many economic development lists.

In its ranking of the top 30 cities, the first five are Houston, Washington, Dallas, Atlanta, and Austin, Tex. In all, 12 of the 30 states are located in the South or Southwest.

According to the magazine, the top cities prevailed mostly because employers in those places posted the greatest number of jobs for new graduates.
